2026 Summer Reads

2026 Summer Reads

Summer is here! That means we are looking for some fun reads for beachtime adventures or poolside relaxation. When I think of something to read in the summer, I typically lean towards something that is exciting, fun, and gets your attention. I personally prefer to save my cozy reads for fall and winter. So I have created a little guide for those looking for a good book (or series) to pick up while enjoying the hotter months.

Literature

  • Homicide and Halo-Halo by Mia P Manansala

    • This is the second in this series, but this takes place in summer so to me it felt fitting to list. I really recommend reading the entire series. It is an excellent murder-mystery novel that has the right amount of suspense and will definitely make you hungry.

  • A Forgery of Fate by Elizabeth Lim

    • This book is gorgeous. From start to finish, this book is a beautiful journey. An underwater kingdom, dragons, and a touch of love. Honestly, this book is perfect to get lost in and I promise you won’t want to put it down.

  • Abroad in Japan by Chris Broad

    • I highly recommend listening to the audiobook for this one. Narrated by the author himself, it takes you through the beginning years of this popular YouTuber’s life in Japan. Great for those interested in learning more about life in Japan and the experiences from someone who went abroad in the beginning for work.

  • The Poet Empress by Shen Tao

    • This one is a bit of a heavier, longer read. If you’re up for it, definitely go for it! This novel gives us a brave and crafty main character who learns how to use knowledge and poetry to her advantage. A beautiful blend of Chinese mythology and imperial drama.

  • Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa

    • Sometimes we need a change to help ourselves start over. A fresh start to find our place in the world and what we want to do. This novel explores life when you need a pause to figure things out. A break to just experience life and get a breath of fresh air. I really loved this book and it is a fairly quick read.

Manga

  • Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou by Hitoshi Ashinano

    • One of my favorite mangas ever! This story is very laidback and takes place in a seaside town that has the vibes of a perpetual summer. The characters are super lovely and the art is gorgeous.

  • Choking on Love by Keiko Iwashita

    • A college romance that doesn’t follow the typical copy-paste style that most romance manga have. I really enjoy anything by this author as I feel she expresses her characters very well.

  • Ultraman by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi

    • If you prefer something along the lines of science fiction and maybe need some action, definitely give this manga a shot. Very engaging and perfect if you are a classic hero fan.

  • The Hitman Stans by Rintarou Ohshima

    • A comedy about a hitman who decides to retire from his profession to take up being a huge fan of an idol! There is something really amusing to me about characters who don’t fit the mold of someone who would be interested in idols and idol culture. This is a fun read for sure.

  • Restart After Coming Back Home by Cocomi

    • A very lovely, wholesome BL manga about a young man who returns to his home in the countryside after losing his job. This manga is very heartwarming and shows the growth of two young men finding themselves in the world. A nice quick read if you’re out by the pool and lucky for you, there is a sequel!

I am hopeful that some of these titles may catch your eye and be a good read while you’re enjoying summer! There are definitely way more that I could list, but I didn’t want to make this list super long. Happy reading!
